In 2024, I posted two articles about the Audi A2, focusing on diecast models in different scales such as 1/24 Scale Audi A2 by Welly, 1/43 Audi A2 model by Minichamps and 1/30 Audi A2 car toy by Kinsmart. As we all know, the production Audi A2 debuted in 2000. Its prototype, the Audi Al2 concept car, was unveiled at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, three years ahead of the production model’s launch.
The Audi AL2, an all-aluminum compact concept car unveiled at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, served as the direct prototype for the production Audi A2 launched in 1999. Built around Audi’s ASF (Audi Space Frame) technology, it featured a three-door configuration and a retractable sunroof as a city microcar. Its development was helmed by Audi’s Munich team together with Belgian designer Luc Donckerwolke.
Audi Al2 debuted at the September 1997 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show and received production approval that November. A light-blue open-top variant named as Open End was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show late the same year.
In addition to the Audi A2 car model we shared before, there is a 1/43 scale Audi Al2 Concept Car model by brand JB-Modellautos, which looks like the Looksmart model.
